The auction estimate explained

Auction estimates play an important role in the art world, offering an expectation of how much an item is likely to sell for at auction. These estimates help both buyers and sellers navigate the sale process with confidence.

€ 300 – € 500?

Typically determined by the auction house or auctioneer, estimates are based on an understanding of the market. Factors like the item’s historical significance, condition, previous auction results for similar items, rarity, and other relevant details are carefully considered.

Auction estimates are presented as a range, with a low and high estimate (eg. € 1.000 – € 1.500). The low estimate often represents the minimum amount the auction house anticipates, while the high estimate reflects the maximum potential. The actual sale price can land within this range—or even outside it—depending on the bidding activity and demand.

For buyers, auction estimates provide a valuable benchmark, helping them determine the item’s worth and decide how much to bid. For sellers, these estimates guide the setting of a reserve price—the minimum amount they are willing to accept for their item.
