Jean-Baptist Van Damme, A Reliquary Crucifix with a Relic of the True Cross, Silver and Brass, Bruges. 1850. 


An exceptional reliquary crucifix with a relic of the True Cross. 

Mounted in a reliquary holder made by Jean-Baptist Van Damme in Bruges, circa 1850. 

The crucifix is made of brass and silver, and finished with the Arma Christi or Objects of Passion: 

Lance, Spear, Sponge, Rooster, Dice, Column of Flaggelation, Crown of Thorns, Hammer and Nails, Veil of Veronica and many more... 


Jean Baptist Van Damme marked the silver parts. 

Also marked with a 'Dubbele Janus', Belgium 1832-1869. 

2nd grade silver. 


The reliquary includes the document, made under the supervision of Joannes Baptista Malou (Bishop of Bruges), dated 1850. 

On the reverse, the relic is sealed (image attached).
