An exceptional and rare ciborium, silver, probably Belgian. Baroque Revival. Circa 1880. 1,794 kg.
An exceptional and richly finished ciborium:
The whole is decorated with images and scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. Richly finished with cabochons, faceted glassware, and natural stones.
The base is finished with angel heads and wings, ears of wheat, and grape vines.
Furthermore, with biblical scenes: 'The Resurrection of Christ', 'Jesus Comforting the Weeping Women, with mount Calvary in the Background,' and 'Jesus Being Laid in the Tomb.'
The Node is finished with three angels with lilies and an anchor.
The Cuppa is finished with images of the Holy Family: 'Joseph, Mary, and Jesus Christ,' and is further richly decorated with ears of wheat and grape vines.
The lid is richly decorated with images of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and Saint John the Baptist.
The top of the lid is decorated with an ornate cross and "The Lamb of God."
Silver:
Marked 800/1000. Probably a Belgian mark, between 1869-1942.
Furthermore, a Dutch import mark on the foot, used between 1814-1893.
The lid also bears a Dutch import mark, but for small pieces.
Given the engraving on the foot, it is likely the ciborium was made around 1881.
Total gross weight: 1.794 kg.
